What is resilience?
We had a good chat today about what resilience means. Finn said it means to not give up! We watched this video about Elmo and we found out he can't do up his buttons...yet. There are lots of things Room 17 kept practicing and can now do. We then decided instead of finding out the things we can't do, what things can't we do...yet? Maybe you could add to our answer garden!

The Elements
Room 17 turned in to budding scientists this week by completing a science experiment for their hands on homework. What happens when you put a dirty copper coin in to salt and vinegar? Finn drew this fabulous diagram to help explain what was happening. It got me thinking about this cool song about the elements. Videos of some students doing their experiments will be posted soon.

Pick of the Bunch Writing Week 7
Last week we had great fun playing in the sandpit! We participated in a few different challenges and then had some time building and digging. Congrats to Hugh who's writing was voted the best this week!
On a very hot day, Room 17 walked to the sandpit. A few minutes later I was digging to the bottom of the sandpit. Eventually I won!

5SC - Josie's Entry Prompt #12
I'm putting my small feet in the freezing cold, soggy water. I'm watching a boy play tug-o-war with a tiny boat. I'm listening to a drip-drop waterfall pouring out of a pipe. My dog is growling at two little ducks swimming in the blue, blue river. The boiling hot sun gazes upon my thin neck.
Five Sentence Challenge - Prompt #12 Layla
Trit, trot, trit, trot. My hooves walked across the gravel. I tried my hardest to pull the people. I was tired. I couldn't do it any more.
Go to the Five Sentence Challenge website to see the picture that was the prompt for this week.

My favourite part of Friday
I love looking at homework books on a Friday and seeing what everyone's done for their hands-on homework, it's my favourite part of Friday!! Check out all the different ways the Room 17 learners found out about the birds that live in their backyard.

Pick of the Bunch Writing Week 6
On Tuesday Room 17 went and played on the senior playground. Mrs B recorded our thoughts and feelings about it on the iPad using Poplet. Jake's writing was voted the best this week!
Whump! I smashed in to solid ground creating a shockwave of bark. I was at the playground on the twisty monkey bars and I'd just fallen off. I went to try again and whump! I decided I would have a break.

Budding Artists
Today we practiced different line drawing techniques. We then used charcoal to draw over a 'photo' of ourselves that had been turned in to a sketch. They're looking pretty cool. We also found out a bit about the artist Andy Warhol. Next week we'll be using our photos and turning them in to Pop Art!

Biggles Team Trip to Long Bay
Our Pick of the Bunch writing this week is from Grace!
On Tuesday we went to the beach and first we had morning tea then we went down to the beach. We raced into the water and we started to splash and jump. Then I started to swish and whizz through the water. Then the wind started to whistle through the air and it started to get freezing cold like an ice-cube. My legs were shaking then I had shivers down my legs. Then I hopped out for a minute then I hoped back in and it got a little bit warmer so I started to splash again. It was such a fun day!

Olivia's 5SC Entry
Storm
I was riding in my car. A storm was smashing on the glass window. I thought I was dreaming but I wasn't. The trees were red and black. My car was smashed.

Five Sentence Challenge!
Each Monday Room 17 will be participating in the 5 sentence challenge. We get a a prompt and then have to write about it in 5 sentences. We had a vote on our two favourites from the students that were able to complete the 5SC! Congrats to Yuna and Olivia. Our prompt this week was Storm. Their sentences get submitted to the 5SC website and may get chosen for the showcase.
Yuna's Entry
I walked in to the black foggy cloud then ze ze! The storm went in to my eyes. I kept on walking and another storm came as the cloud rumbled and cracked. The wind was howling. I was shocked because the lightning hit the ground.

Our Class Treaty
These are the values Room 17 have sworn to live by this year. We used our finger prints as our promise to agree to our treaty!
Did you hear we've got a new name?
It was so much fun on Friday finding out all our new community names! The Tio whanau is now known as The Biggles. A big congrats to Brydie (R20) Holly and Timothy (R19) and our very own Nikita for coming up with the winning name. I can biggle it, can you biggle it?
